The Value of Tradeshows  – TEMP

June 23, 2023

A Vital Component of B2B Marketing Strategy

Too often, people show up at tradeshows to “check the box,” “because we’ve always done it,” and “to maintain our SOV.”  If that’s your attitude, you’re missing the mark—big time. Every square foot of your booth can work for you if you activate with intentionality. And yes, you can measure ROI at every step.

Making the Most of the Shows

Due the pressing need to be “digitally connected,” “prove ROAS,” and “move at the speed of digital,” it’s easy to forego high-investment opportunities, whether that investment is measured monetarily or in time. But by neglecting the high-investment opportunities, you can relinquish the right to high-return.

Tradeshows offer a unique convergence of exposure, engagement and education that can’t be replicated in other channels. For foodservice brands, these events are opportunities to shape perception, connect directly with decision-makers and activate integrated campaigns that influence.

In B2B, relationships matter. Customers want to work with partners they trust—brands that deliver quality, innovation and ultimately understand industry challenges. Tradeshows provide a rare setting where brands can engage face-to-face with chefs, purchasing directors and executives to move connections forward. It’s not just about booth traffic—it’s about engineering an entire ecosystem that leads to real business outcomes.

Activate With Intention

Industry events support an accelerated sales cycle. Conversations and relationships are created and cultivated in real time allowing companies to learn from the ultimate zero-party data source. This happens quickly, and it can be lucrative for manufacturers, so support is vital at all stages of this condensed sales cycle—which means intentional pre-show, in-show and post-show support.

Pre-show

The work you do before the show determines how much value you extract during and after it. Your goal here is to build anticipation, drive booth traffic and align internal teams.

Key strategies include: audience targeting and outreach, messaging and content development, sales and partner enablement and appointment setting/experience.

In-show

The most obvious opportunity, this stage is focused on meaningful connection and real-time brand storytelling. Your presence should be immersive, memorable and measurable.

Key strategies include: an engaging, digitally connected booth experience, live content capture, social media content and coverage and lead capture with qualification.

Post-show

Events don’t end at the closing session. This is where the ROI is won or lost. Your goal is to nurture leads, extend value and prove results.

Key strategies include: prompt follow up with lead nurture campaigns, content repurposing, targeted paid media and data integration to tangible measurement.

Full-Funnel Measurement

While tradeshows are undeniable opportunities, they also come with a price tag—and that drives a need to justify the investment. At each stage of the marketing funnel, at each step of your tradeshow activation plan, there are KPIs to support the ROAS story.

Top of funnel

Here the focus is on reach, visibility and engagement—giving marketers a clear view of how successful the event was in attracting and resonating with the target audience.

Mid-funnel

Now focus shifts to qualifying interest and nurturing. Marketers should track marketing-qualified leads (MQLs), sales-qualified leads (SQLs) and the value of conversations with decision makers.

Bottom of funnel

Finally, we focus on metrics to prove the business impact of the event investment. These include opportunities created, deals influenced or closed and overall pipeline contribution from show-generated leads.

Transform Your Tradeshow Plan

There are so many considerations to factor in when illustrating everything an in-person event can support and achieve. If you’re not putting in the effort to measure every contributing factor, you’re likely not telling the most effective story. That’s why we created our Tradeshow ROI Calculator to help marketers analyze impact, defend spend and make smarter investment decisions across their integrated marketing plans. Because with the right strategy and tools, the ROI of tradeshows is not just trackable—it’s impressive.
